In a race to net zero carbon - every industry sector and every place must play its part. The tools of Planning and Geography must be used to ensure that pathways to net zero carbon remain open as each industry progresses through successive stages towards 2050.

The Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) are setting out the key enablers and barriers along the way - and identifying the reforms, investments and actions needed to ensure that our progress towards net zero carbon is orderly. PIA have drawn on work CRC's, Climateworks and the Greater Cities Commission to map out the land use and planning related interventions in key sectors (eg built environment, transport and infrastructure, energy, manufacturing and agriculture and land use). We have also set out what actions and targets are already in place in every state and territory.

This work is in parallel with advocacy to ensure that city planning and land use systems are an 'enabler' to carbon reduction and climate adaption. PIA will expand on our Climate Conscious Planning Systems work (https://www.planning.org.au/documents/item/11375) which sets out reform priorities in every Australian jurisdiction.
