Kabaddi is a traditional Punjabi wrestling sport that has a nascent development in Australia and Melbourne in particular. Without permanent infrastructure tournaments are staged in improvised locations; soccer fields, empty fields next to housing developments, parks, grounds of Gurudwaras (Sikh temples). The sport is witness to a politicisation on multiple fronts, first as a way for mainstream politics to leverage migrant Punjabi support through grants and photo opportunities. The clearest example of this is Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announcement during the state election of a 'Kabaddi Showcase' as part of the regional 2026 Commonwealth games. Secondly, as a wellspring for displays of support for Sikh separatist movement Khalistan that following the strongly Punjabi inflected farmers protests of 2020-2021 - has increasing visibility. The paper will discuss the politicisation of sport and leisure, along with the dynamics of super diverse migration and the globalisation of political movements of place.
