Hell and high water:  How does media coverage link anthropogenic climate change and extreme weather related events? (18180)

How does the promotion of scientific evidence and claims both for and against the existence of anthropogenic climate change manifest in media coverage of extreme weather-related events?  Media construct narratives that are intended for consumption, and while the reception of these narratives is beyond the scope of this study, the framing of extreme weather-related events in relation to narratives of anthropogenic climate change influence what is emphasized and when silence is perpetuated.  Using case studies of flooding in Sydney and the Illawarra region in February 2023 and a bushfire in Hill End, north of Bathurst, in March 2023, this presentation links media coverage to wider debates about climate change.  Preliminary research findings include the emphasis on proximate causes by media organisations that deny anthropogenic climate change and a need for attribution science to undertake rapid assessments and accurately connect climate change with extreme events.  This will assist with media salience and provide accurate scientific information in a timely manner that can be used in future extreme weather-related events.
