The Australian red meat industry is an important contributor to the National, regional and local economies, providing valuable export income, economic diversification and thousands of jobs directly and in allied industries. In order to maintain and expand access to markets, meet increasingly stringent regulatory requirements and enable expansion within existing spatial footprints, the Australia Meat Processor Corporation (AMPC), the industry body for red meat processors, has set a target of achieving Net Zero by 2030 by using a Circular Economy approach. This will largely be achieved by facilitating replacement of open pond wastewater treatment systems with anaerobic digestor (AD) tanks or covered ponds where gases can be captured and used to generate energy for facilities thereby significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). The liquid will form a recycled water source while the solids, which are normally disposed of to landfill or composters, could be potentially transformed into bio-based fertilisers such as dried digestate and biochar.  Using wastewater solids in an optimised commercial manner and as a base for bio-based fertiliser can help reduce the costs associated with waste management. It can also assist adjacent industries that AMPC does not currently collaborate with (i.e. mining, forestry, municipal, natural resource managers and Landcare) to increase their level of sustainability, thereby enabling overall positive environmental outcomes, improved resource recovery rates, and establishment of a Circular Economy.  To evaluate the potential, the AMPC commissioned spatial analysis of potential bio-based fertiliser production and opportunities for use by target industries in the vicinity of 127 AMPC member establishments. This presentation provides an overview of the methodology used and opportunities for place-based collaboration by red meat processors using a Circular Economy approach
