Australia’s refugee policy lacks a nuanced understanding of the resettlement process. As such, this policy can benefit from recognising that resettlement and integration for refugees and asylum seekers is a trajectory and not simply an event. Overlooking this trajectory means we lack knowledge of what resettling in and creating a new home, materially and symbolically, involves. For this presentation, I will draw from research conducted with Sri Lankan refugees and asylum seekers that examined their (re)creations of home in Sydney and why these (re)creations mattered. The research was an emotional exploration of memory, identity, and migration captured using a filmed walking exercise and interviews. By focussing on stories from Sri Lankan refugees and asylum seekers, I will provide a critical examination of how such stories can help us rethink and better understand the politics and meanings of home for those in some of our most marginalised communities.
