This paper explores the motivations of Latin American migrants who arrive in Australia as students and later decide to stay, despite experiencing downward social mobility and migration insecurities. Recent research has highlighted that many of these migrants are qualified middle and upper-middle-class Latin Americans, predominantly from Brazil and Colombia, who struggle with precarious migration status in Australia. Nevertheless, an increasing number of Latin Americans are extending their permanence and settling in Australia. The paper argues that these migrants balance different geographically bounded facets of insecurities when making these decisions, including socioeconomic and personal insecurities experienced in Latin America and migration insecurities experienced in Australia. The paper draws on ethnographic research conducted with Latin Americans in Australia between 2020 and 2023.
