Susan Caldis

Dr Susan Caldis (she/her) is a Lecturer in the Macquarie School of Education, Macquarie University Wallumattagal Campus. Susan's research focuses on understanding how practitioners manage and respond to complexities facing geography education in secondary school and initial teacher education settings. Susan's current research explores the extent and impact of out-of-field teaching, the experiences of pre-service geography teachers who are transitioning into the teaching profession, and validation of geography teaching standards to elicit transformation of pedagogical practice. Before embarking on an academic career, Susan was a Head Teacher of geography across several NSW secondary schools and led development of the Australian Curriculum: Geography. Beyond the university, Susan is known for her long-term engagement with professional associations and advocacy for geography. Currently, she is Chair of the Australian Geography Teachers Association. Susan was commissioned to Singapore by the Ministry of Education and Academy of Singapore Teachers as the Outstanding Educator in Residence for geographical education. As a STEM Ambassador for geography education, Susan has been instrumental in progressing dialogue with a range of stakeholders about the importance of recognising geography as a STEM subject. In 2022, Susan was awarded the Macdonald Holmes Medal by the Geographical Society of NSW for her outstanding contribution to research and practice in geography education.
